SWOP LA September 2018 Newsletter

September 2018 with SWOP—Los Angeles

Sex Workers’ Outreach Project—Los Angeles is a local chapter of a national social justice network dedicated to the fundamental human rights of people involved in the sex trade and their communities, focusing on ending violence, criminalization, and stigma through education and advocacy. I, Zooey Zara, am the newest Director of the Los Angeles chapter and we have so much to share with you!

Our Los Angeles chapter has seen an inspiring resurgence this summer, and if you are receiving this inaugural newsletter, we have connected somewhere along the way. Thank you for your support and interest! We have a lot to report. But first…

“Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

We at SWOP—Los Angeles want to join you in celebrating all workers, especially sex workers, this Labor Day Weekend-heck, this month!

“The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public ‘the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations’ of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.”

So, to follow in the footsteps of the first Labor Day Celebrations, we shall exhibit to the public, and to one another, the strength, the esprit de corp of this trade and it’s workers. Join us in all that we’ve got going on this September…

Sex worker organizing in the United States has always faced many challenges, but none has been as
devastating and impactful as SESTA/FOSTA. In this changing political terrain it is unclear if our online
platforms for information sharing and building community are safe. Sexuality that is considered dissident
or abnormal is being driven from the internet. This is a vital time for our community to be able to build solidarity, and learn from from each other on how to survive this period. Please DONATE to your Los Angeles chapter today!

If you are a current sex worker fortunate enough to have your own website, please consider adding the SWOP-LA donation button to your site. Please email [email protected] for the HTML code. It is very simple!

Thank you so much for taking a look at what your local SWOP chapter is up to. Please share our events with your communities and attend the events we support. Please also email us about possible partnerships and cross-promotional activities.

We are continually adding to our brand-new website at and if you would like to be added to our resources list, please contact us directly via email or our website.

In Solidarity,

Zooey Zara
Director of Sex Workers’ Outreach Project-Los Angeles
